Year of the Goat

January 2015 – Residents of Tiong Bahru was again greeted by another group of animals, this time a trio of goat murals were installed to usher in the Lunar New Year. The Chinese animal zodiac, or shengxiao is a repeating cycle of 12 years, with each year being represented by an animal and its reputed attributes. Every year during the Lunar New Year period the retailers usurp these animal symbols for commercial purposes and in the process transforming the animals into comical and mythical creatures.  2015 was the Lunar New Year of the Goat and in this work the humble goat is offered up by the artist as a realistic representation of the commercial usage in an attempt to blur the borders of the real and the commercially created.
